DERBY DAY DELIGHT FOR HERTFORD TOWN AT THEY WIN BIG AGAINST THE CITIZENS

OUT WITH THE OLD.........
...AND IN WITH THE NEW LOOK HERNS WAY FOR THE 2016/17 SEASON - THE CITIZENS ARE A CLUB LOOKING FOR PROMOTION FROM THE SSMFL
Herns Way hosted a local derby in the Spartan South Midlands League u25 Development Division last night as Welwyn Garden City u25s entertaining Hertford Town u25s.

The visitors came with a league record of five wins and two draws in their seven games played with Welwyn winning three, drawing one and losing one of their five games played.

Hertford Town started some experienced players including first team player's Ben Andreos and Tommy Wade up front along with defender Jack Barlett (who has made several first team appearences this season and played 30 times for Hoddesdon Town during the 2015/16 campaign). Midfielder Brett O'Connor also started having recently made the move from Hoddesdon Town where he had made eight first team appearences this term. He is player well known to first team manager Gavin Kelsey having played under him with The Lillywhites last season.

Welwyn lined up with a young side but did include goalkeeper Jack Metcalfe who signed for the club in the summer and has played eight times for the first team this season.

It was Hertford who were the better side going 2-0 up with a goal direct from a corner and a tap in from ultra close range via a Citizen's defender. They could of been further in front as they had a number of chances including hitting the cross-bar. Welwyn competed well and could pulled it back to 1-2 at the break when Marcus Bourne made a great save to tip the ball over his cross-bar.

The second half saw Hertford Town dominate scoring a further six goals with Welwyn scoring via a penalty which was initially well saved by Bourne only for the rebound to be headed in.

All in all this was a highly entertaining game with some promising players gaining some good game time alongside some more experienced players which is what the division is all about.

Although the game was free entrance everyone in attendance gave some money to a bucket collection for local 8 year old boy Mason who has just been diagnosed with Leukemia - £105 was raised. The Citizens will also be having a collection in their first team's top of the table clash with London Colney on Saturday and donating a percentage of the gate money on the day. If you are local please come along, dig deep and donate to help Mason and his family through these difficult times.

Match highlights are below including all of the nine goals scored.
