CITIZENS COLLECT THREE POINTS OFF THE VILLAGERS

There was a real local feel to the match at The Gosling Stadium on Tuesday night as Welwyn Garden City travelled just over two miles from Herns Way to face Codicote who currently ground share the stadium (actually located in Welwyn) with Premier Division Hatfield Town. The short journey The Citizens had made is far longer than the seven mile trip to Codicote's spiritual village home at Bury Lane.

It was 7th (15 wins from 30) versus 16th (6 wins from 28) going into the game so the home side were firm favourites to win the game. It looked to be going that way when Alec Thomas opened the scoring early on to make it 1-0. Freddie Hester in the away goal will have wanted to do better to stop the shot from just outside the box.

However, those in the 33 crowd present, saw a strong fightback by The Citizens who came back to win 1-2.  Sadu Tiberiu scored early in the second half (sorry i didn't capture this goal on camera) and Ade Osobu scored minutes later with the goal of the match with a lovely volley right into the top corner. Welwyn really have improved since the beginning of the season with Scott O'Donoghue and Pablo Ardiles building for hopefully better things next season.

Geoff Knight (centre back - number 6) played a great game looking very composed at the back for the away side. He had just been brought in by O'Donoghue from their reserve side. Hester also made amends for his mistake early on by claiming numerous shots and crosses from the home side.

Cod, whom have a number of ex Citizen's players in their team, looked very dismayed at losing this game but with the quality Liam Errington has available they will come back stronger in the following weeks. They will need to play much better next Tuesday when they face Cockfosters in the Challenge Trophy Semi-Final at The Gosling Stadium. This should be a really decent game of football so if your local to the area I recommend a visit for this game.

The Citzens visit Langford on Saturday before taking a trip to Chesham United Reserves next Wednesday.
