RED AND BLACKS LIFT THE DIVISION ONE CUP AFTER EXTRA TIME

It was The Hertford and District ORC Sports League Division One Cup on Friday night at The County Ground in Letchworth. Buntingford Wanderers played The Lions (based in Ware - not to be confused with Ware Lions whose first team withdrew from the Premier Division this season) in front of a decent crowd who were vocal throughout their game in support for their team.

The first half was quite a scrappy affair with not much goalmouth incident to talk about aside from when The Wanderers took the lead right before the break when The Lions keeper could only parry a shot from the right hand side into the path of another attacker who knocked the ball into the net.

The Lions came out very early for the second half and equalised shortly after with a very well taken goal. The player lofted the ball over the keeper from the edge of the box when he got through and beat the offside trap.

Buntingford then could and maybe should have been given a penalty kick when their player appeared to be brought down in the area by The Lions keeper. The referee deem it a foul and the game carried on with The Lions looking the most likely to score with them hitting the post and crossbar once. The video shows the incident from 3mins 25secs with a slow motion replay. What do you think - Was it a penalty kick?

The game went to extra-time and with penalty kicks looming and looking ominous it was The Lions who scored the decisive goal with a sweetly taken free kick from the right hand edge of the box to the delight of their bench and travelling fans.
