THE CITIZENS HOLD ON TO COLLECT A VALUABLE THREE POINTS AT COCKFOSTERS

To sum up yesterday afternoon at Chalk Lane you could say Welwyn Manager Adam Fisher would of been very pleased to win the game as his side (who were missing a number of key players) dug in and defended the 2-0 lead they had from goals scored in the first half and 'Foster's manager Dean Barker would of been gutted his team didn't get anything from a game they played so well in but could have very little fault in the performance they put it. The game pitched second v third in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. The Citizens are one of the favourites for the title after finishing in fourth place last season and signing a number of impressive players over the summer with 'Foster's young side having an excellent start to their season winning five of their league games.

The away side made an excellent start when Taishan Griffith (recently signed from Evo Stik Southern League Premier Division side Dunstable Town) scored a wonderful goal when on the edge of the box smashed a looping bending shot past Tautis Paoniskatis in the home goal after 10 minutes. It got even better when on 27 minutes James Ewington latched on to a through ball and was able to round the keeper and hit the back of the net.

Credit to 'Fosters who enjoyed large spells of possession, especially in the second half, with Emmnauel Melford-Rowe very influential in midfield and going forward. Oliver Leslie in the Welwyn goal pulled off an amazing save to keep the score at 0-2. 'Foster's good work got them the goal they deserved when a free kick floated into the box was headed into his own net by a Welwyn defender.

Despite pressure piled on from the home side it was Welwyn who made the trip back up the A1 with a welcome three points which sees them move up into second place four points below London Colney who won 5-1 at home versus Sun Sports yesterday. MATCH HIGHLIGHTS are below.

Both Welwyn Garden City and Cockfosters are in Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy First Round action this midweek. 'Fosters welcome Divison One side Hatfield Town to Chalk Lane on Tuesday evening and The Citizen's welcome Division Two side The 61 (FC) on Wednesday evening.

Please get along and support your local sides - they will be very pleased to see new visitors to their grounds.
