LIONS TOO GOOD FOR WODSON PARK

MATCH PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 6th FEBRUARY 2013
WODSON PARK 1 LONDON LIONS 8

London Lions visited Wodson Park on Wednesday evening in a Spartan South Midlands League Division One game played on a very sticky muddy pitch that had already been well used by Ware and Harlow Town the previous evening.

The Lions are one of the favourites for the league title (along with Cockfosters, Harpenden Town and Hoddesdon Town) with the home team's young side struggling down the bottom end of the division. However, Wodson did come into this game in their best form of the season having beaten Amersham Town (5-1) and Southall (1-0) in their last games. They had only won two other league games (at Winslow and New Bradwell St Peter) in the twenty four they had played.

The Lions had lost twice (against Harpenden and Hoddesdon) in their twenty one games and have some really impressive players within their squad including ex Woking and Dagenham and Redbridge striker Sam Sloma, ex Enfield Towner Dean Nyman and ex Ilford and Waltham Abbey front man Adam Bolle who has been scoring many goals this season.

The result was never in doubt from kick off as the away side played some really decent passing football on a difficult playing surface. Sam Sloma showed his class with a great finish to start what ended up as a very convincing victory. Sloma scored another two goals to record a hat-trick with his second goal being the stand out goal of the night. Check it out from around 10m 45s on the video below. Bolle scored four and Craig Ellis added another with a deflected free kick.

Wodson kept trying and didn't give up even though they were clearly second best on the night. They got their reward when they scored a consolation goal which was a header from a corner kick.

The biggest cheer of the night came right on 90 minutes when Wodson's keeper made a great penalty save from Lion's player coach Darren Yarlett who had come on as a late substitute. Wodson's keeper had kept the score down with some fine stops especially in the first half.

On this performance TheColdEnd would say London Lions could of beaten both Ware and Harlow Town (Ryman Division One North - Step 4) that I had seen play on the same pitch the night before.

The forty one people present who had skipped watching the England v Brazil game on television were rewarded for standing in the cold with some really good action and goals.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
including all nine goals scored

The Lions week went from good to bad on Saturday afternoon when they lost 4-0 at ninth placed Bedford who are one of the form teams in the division having won seven of their last eight games.
